In all probability governments are likely to ban inefficient
(incandescent) light bulbs. As these bans come into force
the standard halogen and standard incandescent bulbs will
be mandated off the market.
Prepare now so that you wont be caught out. If youre
not already using compact fluorescent lights, it could be
as simple as screwing-in a new light bulb.
CFL lamps provide more light with less power. All compact
fluorescent lights use less electricity. The typical CFL lamps
uses 66-75% less electricity to produce the same amount of
light as a comparable incandescent bulb. The reason for this
is that as much as 90% of the energy used by a standard light
bulb is used to produce heat, not light. Standard bulbs make
light by passing electricity through a small wire or filament.
CFL bulbs utilize a gas charged tube. Electricity passed through
the tube creating a chemical reaction that produces the light.
The result is a cooler, more efficient light source, producing
more light (lumens) with less power.
CFL lamps reduce pollution. The electricity you use
to power your lights is produced by a fossil fueled (coal)
power plant. Every watt of energy you use can be translated
to pollution created at its source, to generate that energy.
Conversely, by every watt you reduce your power usage; you
reduce those same polluting emissions power you simply
dont need anymore. If you were to change all of your
lights from the standard bulbs to CFLs you would reduce
your energy needs for lighting by 66 to 75%. Thats a
significant reduction.
CFL lamps last longer. High quality CFLs can
last from 8,000 to 15,000 hours. The standard light bulb will
usually last at maximum 1000 hours.
CFL lamps do cost more. The long term benefits far
outway the initial set up expense.
CFL lamps contain a trace amount of mercury and should be
disposed of properly; in the same manor as other household
hazardous waste products like paint, batteries and non-digital
thermostats.

2. LED
Another alternative is the LED (Light Emitting Diode). They
are VERY efficient at less than 3 watts. They come in 240 volt
and 12 volt versions so its as simple as replacing the
lamp. The 12 volt version fits in the same lamp that fits in
normal low voltage down-light fittings. It is advisable to try
one or two before deciding on mass replacement of your halogen
down-lights.
There are a lot of advantages in using LED lamps:-
| - |
They produce more light per watt than do
ordinary (incandescent) lamps. |
| - |
They can emit light of an intended colour
or multi-colours without the use of color filters that
traditional lighting methods require. |
| - |
They are solid state components and are
therefore quite robust in comparison to fluorescent and
incandescent lamps. |
| - |
They achieve maximum brightness instantly
no warm up time. |
| - |
They have a very long expected life at 35,000
hours. |
| - |
The cost of ownership is very low when the
long life of the lamp and the low energy use is taken
into account. |
| - |
When replacing a halogen 50 watt down-light
lamp with a 3 watt LED the total energy saving will be
94%. |
