YOUR SITUATION > My home is too cold
The reasons for your home being cold are many and varied. Just because your home is in a cold climate does not mean YOU have to be cold.
1) Air leakage: The primary reason is (usually) air leakage. 15% to 25% of your winter heating can be lost through air leakage. Sometimes air leakage is obvious such as draughts under doors or around ill-fitting windows, but others can be less obvious.
2) Ineffective or no ceiling insulation: Short of owning a boat, having no ceiling insulation is the fastest way to throw away your money. For every $1,000 spent on heating, $350 goes straight up through your ceiling if your ceiling insulation is inadequate.
3) Lack of solar access: The sun is our greatest, free heating resource. But most homes are designed to keep the sun out in summer meaning that we are missing out on free heat in winter. There are many ways of bringing the sun's warmth into your home without demolition!
4) Inefficient windows: Around 20% of your heating can be lost through your windows. This can be even more if they don't seal properly. The chances are that your windows are contributing to making you colder and poorer.
5) No floor insulation: 10% to 20% of your heating can be lost through your floor. Almost all timber floors have no insulation fitted below them and this situation is worsened if the sub-floor area is not enclosed.
6) Lack of Wall Insulation: The vast majority of homes with some form of wall insulation simply have a layer of laminated foil - and it's probably not working the way it was meant to. Between 15% to 25% of your heating can be lost straight through your walls.
