YOUR SITUATION > My home is too hot

There are many things that contribute to the summer heat penetrating your house.

Some of these include:-

1) Air leakage: Air leakage from doors, windows, exhaust fans and recessed down lights, provide easy paths for heat penetration.

2) No, or ineffective ceiling insulation: Your attic space may become very, very hot in summer. The only protection you have from that heat is your ceiling. Your home may have no insulation, or the insulation it has may be old, ineffective or displaced. This will affect heat transfer.

3) No, or inadequate roof ventilation: Hot air builds up in your attic creating temperatures as high as 60 degrees. This heat radiates downwards into your home and causes much discomfort. The effectiveness of ceiling insulation will be reduced by the additional heat load, and if you have air conditioning, it is forced to work even harder.

4) Lack of solar shading: Heat gain through windows is a major contributor to heat gain within your home. Solar control films can help but limit winter solar warming - the ideal solution is one that works in summer and winter.

5) Poor cross ventilation: On very hot days cross ventilation becomes paramount. Cross ventilation is the ability for a breeze to easily flow through the house from one side to the other.

6) Lack of wall insulation: Heat transfer is bi-directional. Just as no (or poor) insulation in your walls keeps you cold in winter, it lets the heat in to the same extent in summer. Worse still, the outer layer of bricks in brick veneer construction are heated by the sun and continue to radiate that heat energy into your home well into the night.

7) The wrong insulation: The wrong type of insulation in certain applications can actually reduce comfort.
