Windows are made up of four components:-

- the frame
- the glass
- the window covering
- window shades

All four components contribute to the overall thermal performance of your window.

The performance of windows in summer and in winter are two quite different issues.

Frame types include – improved aluminum; thermally broken aluminum; aluminum clad timber frame; timber and UPVC frames. Timber and UPVC frames are the most thermally efficient window frames. The choice of window frame material can make a large difference to the overall performance of glazing in a home.

Types of glass – clear, float or annealed; grade A safety glass (+ or laminated); Low e (most useful in keeping winter heat in); toned (most useful in reducing summer heat gain); reflective coatings (increased privacy and reduce solar heat gain); double glazing (a combination of two panes of glass with a still insulation air space between the panes - most effective for retaining winter warmth).

Window coverings - using heavy drapes makes a difference. Adding a pelmet also makes a difference. Combining heavy drapes and a pelmet, when drawn across the window, can make about the same difference as double glazing. ecoMaster has recently developed invisible pelmets!

Window shading - Over many years, the trend has been to add more and more glazing to our homes. One of the results of this process has been the increase of summer discomfort due to excessive heat gain through east, north and especially west facing glazing. Summer heat gain can be mitigated by external shading which can be achieved in many ways.
