The journey of 45 members of the Business Blueprint group commenced on 16 April 2018 as they flew all the way to Bangkok, Thailand for this year’s Hands Across the Water Charity Bike Ride. The event will run until 23 April.
For the fifth time in a row, the group will cycle 500 kilometers through Southern Thailand to raise funds for “at-risk” children sheltered and cared for by the Hands Across The Water charity. Most of them were displaced after the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004.
It is also ecoMaster founders Maurice and Lyn Beinat’s second time to participate in the event. After their successful finish last year and having appreciated the impact of the cause to the lives of Thai children, the couple has committed to contribute to the charity annually.
We’ve won the lottery of birth. We’ve been fortunate enough to be born in a first world country; probably with a loving family. I’ve certainly been a beneficiary of that.
“We’ve got modern conditions to live in, schools to go to, three meals a day. But it is just a lottery of birth and some people don’t win that lottery. They end up in very poor and trying circumstances,” said Maurice shortly after having completed last year’s bike ride.
Yesterday, the riding group visited the Klong Toey slum in Bangkok where they witnessed firsthand the poor living conditions of families there. It was a stark contrast to a privileged life of a westerner living in Australia.
“A mum with two small children makes motifs to earn money to buy food for her family and medicine for her husband. How does that family eat when no one buys the motifs? You would have to have a heart of stone to not be moved by what we saw today. said Lyn who was moved to tears at the sight of impoverishment before her.”
