Your Front Door’s Leaking Air Like a Sieve — Let’s Fix That

DIY Projects – Sealing your Front Door

Beautiful but Drafty Front door without a door seal

You know that chilly breeze sneaking in from under your front door? Yeah, that’s your hard-earned heating politely exiting the building. And what’s replacing it? Cold air, dust, smoke, pollen, mozzies, and enough noise to host a neighbourhood podcast.

That’s why this little DIY job is such a game-changer.

There are two ways to achieve this:

    1. Quick, Cheap and Temporary
    2. Thorough and Long Term

If option 1 is you, it is better if you stop reading now as you will need to get on with replacing your weather stripping every year or two.

If option 2 is you, then you have come to the right place for long term quality solutions that will last the life of your door. ecoMaster has been in business for 20+ years and pride ourselves on developing and providing long term solutions for our clients.

In a single afternoon, you can seal that door properly — not with dodgy foam strips or a rolled-up towel, but with seriously smart hardware that lasts.

That’s where this DIY project comes in.

With the right tools and a bit of guidance, sealing a single hinged door (most of Australia’s front doors) is one of the highest-impact upgrades you can make to your home.

And best of all, it’s totally achievable — even for first-time DIYers.

What You’re About to Do

You’re going to seal your front (and / or back) door so well that freezing winter air doesn’t even look in your direction.

What many people don’t realise is that a door has four separate edges — the two sides, the top, and the bottom — and each of these lets in air differently. That means no single product can seal them all effectively. The sides and top require a flexible, compressive seal that adjusts to uneven gaps, while the bottom needs a durable seal that moves with the door without dragging. Using the right solution for each part is key to creating a truly draught-proof door.

With the ecoMaster External Door Draught Proofing Kit, you’ll be using:

✅ Draught Dodgers to seal the sides and top

✅ Raven RP3 Automatic Drop Door Seal for the bottom

Together, they create a flexible, long-lasting barrier against draughts, dust, smoke, insects and noise — no more sticky foam strips that fall off or stop your door from closing!

Why This Works

(When Other Stuff Doesn’t)

Because we’ve all tried the cheap foam that peels off in a week, or the door snake that somehow ends up in the dog’s bed.

Even a 2mm gap around your door can add up to a hole the size of a basketball. Sealing it means your heater
(or cooler) doesn’t have to work overtime.

This kit actually does what it promises:

    • Seals uneven gaps (even on wonky old doors)
    • Doesn’t stop your door from closing
    • Doesn’t require a carpenter to install it
    • Doesn’t look like you’ve DIY’ed in the dark

The ecoMaster Door Seal

The ecoMaster External Door Draught Proofing Kit combines two professional-grade components:

🪵 Draught Dodgers – Perimeter Door Seal

These attach to the door frame, not the jamb, so they’re perfect for doors with uneven or shifting gaps. They create a tight seal that’s long-lasting and won’t crush like sticky foam strips.

🔽 Raven RP3 – Automatic Drop-Down Door Seal

This clever bottom seal drops down when the door is closed and lifts up when it opens — giving you an invisible, no-trip barrier underneath your door that seals gaps up to 14mm.

🛒 You can get both components together here (and save $):

Step-by-Step: How to Seal Your External Door

If you are a “Watcher” – here are the installation videos

If you are a “Reader” – here are the installation instructions (but really, seriously, it’s much better if you watch the videos).

🛠 Step 1: Gather Your Tools

    • External Door Draught Proofing Kit (or the individual components)
    • Cleaning cloth
    • Pair or scissors
    • Tape measure
    • Pencil
    • Screwdriver (Philips head)
    • Hacksaw or drop saw (to trim to fit)
    • Drill

📏 Step 2: Measure Your Door

Measure the width and height of your door and the available space on the frame to ensure your components will fit cleanly. Mark where each component will be installed, following the included video instructions.

🔧 Step 3: Fit the Raven RP3 Seal

  • Trim the Raven RP3 to the width of your door using a hacksaw or drop saw (better).
  • Attach it to the bottom of the inside face of your door as per the video instructions.
  • Adjust the screw mechanism so that the seal drops fully when the door closes, and lifts when it opens.

🪚Step 4: Install the Draught Dodgers

  • Use the included packer to position the timber mouldings at the correct distance from the door face.
  • Peel back the high-performance adhesive tape to fix the Draught Dodgers in place.
  • Install the compressive seal into the groove, then trim the ends neatly to suit.

The result? A flexible perimeter seal that works even if your door has a wonky gap (which most do).

This creates a nearly invisible draught barrier that doesn’t drag or make your door harder to open.

Success Story: “No More Wind Howling Through My Hallway”

“We installed the Draught Dodgers and RP3 seal on our front door after realising how much cold air was coming in. The difference was instant. We no longer get that awful gust of wind every time someone walks down the hall. It looks neat, was easy to install, and feels like a professional finish.”
